How To Cite Books In An Essay

The word quote means to speak or write or refer to something from a particular writer. It’s quoting a passage or a book as an authority. A quote in the text ends with a statement that is someone else’s original work. Therefore, whenever the reference to another person’s work is mentioned, be sure to mention the original author, the book and the chapter or page from which the quotations were taken.

Basic Rules for the quotation in the text

In the style of the Association of Modern Languages (MLA), the citation of the works of others in its text is made by the use of what is known as parenthetical citation. This method consists of placing the relevant source information in parentheses after a quotation or paraphrase.

General Guidelines

• The source of information required in a parenthetic appointment depends (1.) about the source medium (such as print, web, report) and (2.) on the entry of the source in the cited Works page (bibliography).

• Any source information you provide in-text must correspond to the source information on the above mentioned Works page. More specifically, any word or phrase that you provide to your readers in the text should be the first thing that appears on the left margin of the corresponding entry in the list of cited works.

Author-Page Style-Citation Text

The MLA style of writing uses the author-text dating Page style. This means that the author’s surname and the page number of the book from which the quotation or paraphrase is quoted must appear in the text, and a complete reference must appear on the page of his cited works. The author’s name may appear either in the phrase itself or in parentheses after the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number should always appear in parentheses, not in the text of his sentence.

Citation In The Text Of A Known Author And His Book

To quote printed sources such as books, magazines, academic journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signword or phrase (usually the author’s surname) and a page number. If you provide the word/phrase in the sentence, you do not need to include it in the quotation in parentheses.

Quote In The Text Of Unknown Author

When quoting books or works of unknown author, the rules are slightly different. When the source does not have a known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author’s name. Place the title in quotation marks if it is a short work (such as an article) or in CUR Sardinia if it is a longer work (such as plays, books, entire websites) and provide a page number if it is available.

There are several other similar rules that are being followed to quote pages of books by multiple authors, as well as books different from the same authors. Corporate authors can be cited using their reporting names.

The important point to bear in mind here is that there are several rules that are followed to quote several books and works by different authors in an essay. But, due credit must be given to the original book and to the author. The reference section should also contain this information. There should be no attempt to use any of these references without due credit to the author and the exact reference of the page.
